The Unexpected Perks of Picture Books for Grown-ups

It’s a sad misconception, that picture books are only for children. They are not. They are for everyone. Yes, you too. No, you are not too old or wise for picture books. In reality, grown-ups can gain just as much — if not more — from these visually rich, often deceptively simple but brilliant stories. Here’s 5 reasons why adults too, can benefit from diving into picture books:

1.     Rediscovering the Joy of Simplicity and Wonder
In the hustle and bustle of adulthood, (yes, the struggle is real), it’s easy to lose sight of the simple joys in life. Picture books remind us of the beauty in simplicity — whether it’s the wonder of a new discovery, the delight in colorful artwork, or the soothing rhythm of a familiar story. When we are bogged down by the complexity of life, we can embrace a more mindful, relaxed pace by picking up a picture book. These books often provide me with a moment of reflection on life's simplest joys and challenge me to appreciate the present moment - just as our children does.

2.     Tapping Into Nostalgia – In A New Way
Picture books often tackle profound themes like love, loss, kindness, and self-discovery in a way that resonates with readers of all ages. For grown-ups, revisiting these themes through the lens of a picture book can bring about new insights (and dare I say challenge your current viewpoint). Tapping into nostalgia is just fun in itself. But many childhood stories that I now revisit as a grownup, feels fresh and relevant, even so many years after first encountering them.

3.     Find Calm and Comfort
Reading a picture book requires slowing down and being present. Their gentle tones, uplifting messages and often repetitive structure provide adults with a reassuring reminder that it's okay to take a step back and simplify. I love getting a little lost in a beautiful picture book with my youngest, when life seems a little too hectic.

4.     Sparking Creativity and Inspiration
The visual storytelling in picture books sometimes blows my mind. Some illustrations are just breathtaking, and the storyline so compelling that it can’t help reignite your own imagination, leading you to approach your own projects — whether artistic, personal, or professional — with a new perspective. A brilliant picture book always sparks creativity and inspiration in me.

5.     Strengthening Bonds with Children (or Grandchildren)
The fifth and final one. And the very best perk of them all, should say so myself. Picture books creates a brilliant opportunity for grown-ups to connect with the children or grandchildren in their lives in a meaningful way. Shared reading time is a beautiful recipe for connection and bonding, but it also allows grown-ups to see the world through a child’s eyes again. And THAT is a superpower in itself.

So It's clear now that picture books aren’t just for children, right? And I could mention that the rich cultural diversity found in picture books certainly wouldn’t harm you either. Insight into worldviews and ways of thinking that expands your horizons isn’t I bad thing you know. We are all a little better off for it. :-) So the next time you find yourself looking for a quick escape or a way to reconnect with your own inner child, pick up a picture book. You’re never too old or wise to experience the magic they hold.
